Windstorm and Debris Damage to Multi-Family Dwelling Roofs

Windstorm and Debris Damage to Multi-Family Dwelling RoofsA sturdy roof is crucial to protecting a building and the people who live there. When the roof is damaged by wind or debris, it can begin to leak and cause even greater damage to the building. According to the Insurance Information Institute, wind and hail damage accounted for 34 percent of homeowners insurance losses in the United States in 2019, which makes it the number one cause of damage to a residence.

In order to best protect your assets and investments, you need a roofing company that will detect and fix the problems as soon as possible. Some companies may try to convince you that you need a brand new roof so they can make more money. At Kidd Roofing, we believe in being honest with our customers and helping you find the most cost-effective yet high-quality solution.

Why You Need an Experienced Roofer

As the owner or manager of a multi-family residence, you understand that any type of repair can get a bit complicated. The repairs must usually be done quickly to minimize inconvenience to the residents, and it is important to have high-quality work that is uniform across all buildings. Of course, all of this should be done at an affordable price. It seems this is a lot to ask, but at Kidd Roofing, this is what we do every day.

If you hire a less-experienced roofer, they may miss underlying problems and only make superficial repairs, only to discover later on that additional repair is needed. When done correctly, roof repairs should last as long as the lifetime of the roof itself. To make matters worse, many roofing companies are not honest and will try to convince you to replace the whole roof when only minor repairs are necessary so that they can charge significantly more.

Our roofers will first conduct a thorough inspection to understand the scope of the damage, and then provide you with an honest quote. We will then work hard to complete quality work that will last for years to come.

Why Choose Us

At Kidd Roofing, we only hire experienced roofers who are capable of completing any type of roof repair. We will never hire temporary labor to get a job done quickly. We are also proud to have a strong reputation for working closely with property insurance companies when you need to file a claim due to storm damage. This process can be complicated at times, but we have members of our team who have worked as insurance adjustors who will help make the process as smooth as possible.

How Do Windstorms Cause Damage to Roofs?

Roofers must install roofs that meet certain safety codes and requirements to protect the structure from wind, but even well-built roofs can sustain damage during heavy storms. There are several ways a roof can become damaged during a storm including:

Wind gusts – Wind does not hit every part of the roof equally. The corners, edges, and ridgeline of the roof are most susceptible to damage during a windstorm. Heavy wind gusts can cause corner shingles and flashing to come loose, exposing these areas to moisture and leakage.

Additionally, high winds can create a suction effect called lifting, where the shingles are lifted up. This can loosen the nails and weaken the sealant between shingles, leading to leakage.

Occasionally, a strong enough wind gust can rip an entire roof off a building, especially if the roof was already damaged or old. This is especially common with metal commercial roofs. Wind gusts can also rip off HVAC units or other rooftop components, causing significant damage.

Trees and other debris – Falling trees and tree limbs can cause major damage to a roof during a windstorm. In fact, blowing debris is usually a bigger problem than the wind itself. Trees and limbs can puncture the roof, causing severe leaking and sometimes underlying structural damage.

If an HVAC unit or other roofing component is torn off by a heavy wind gust, it can cause additional damage as it tumbles across the roof.

Tornadoes – According to the Insurance Information Institute, Texas had the second-highest number of tornadoes in the United States in 2020, with 102 tornadoes that touched down. Although Austin does not see many tornadoes, they do happen occasionally and can cause significant roof damage.

It is crucial to address damage from a windstorm as soon as possible to protect the integrity of the roof. If another windstorm comes after the roof is already damaged, the chance of the roof sustaining more extensive damage increases. Each time it rains, water can enter the building. That water can cause mold and mildew, rotting, and can damage ceilings, carpet, and the contents of the building.

Contact an Austin Multi-Family Roofer Today to Repair Wind Damage

The longer you wait to have your roof looked at after a windstorm, the more time you allow for water and pests to enter your property, which can cause mold, rot, and infestations. If you spot the problems early on, a minor repair may greatly extend the life of your roof. However, if you wait too long, more extensive and costly repairs or even a total roof replacement, may be necessary to protect your property.

Kidd Roofing has been installing and repairing roofs since 1982. Our team has built a reputation for hard work, honestly, and a quality product. There are many roofers in the Austin area, but they are not all equal. Leaving your roofing repairs to an inexperienced or unethical roofer can lead to further problems and higher costs.
